Steve Mears began his hockey career at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where he spent his 4 years calling games for the Falcons hockey team while earning his broadcasting degree. Following this, he called 4 seasons for the CHL’s Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, being named the CHL broadcaster of the year in 2005.
Thus began Steve’s career in the NHL, when he was hired as the radio play by play broadcaster for the New York Islanders from 2006 through 2009. He then worked as a radio host and Pens TV host for the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2009 through 2012 prior to beginning his national career at the NHL Network in New York City. While at the NHL Network, Steve hosted multiple TV shows including NHL Live, NHL NOW, and MLB Tonight. In addition to this, he served as play-by-play announcer for the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship and NHL International, where he called play-by-play for outdoor games, All Star games, and the Stanley Cup Final from 2016 through 2019. While in New York City, he also worked as a host on MSG Radio Network and called select radio games for the New York Rangers.
