About Steve

Steve Mears has been the play-by-play broadcaster of the Penguins on AT&T SportsNet since the beginning of the 2017-2018 season. Prior to this, he spent the five seasons with NHL Network, which included serving as host of NHL Live, NHL NOW and as play-by-play announcer for the World Junior Hockey Championship and NHL International. As the voice of NHL International, Mears has called numerous outdoor NHL games, All-Star Games, and the Stanley Cup Final since 2016. While living in New York City, he also broadcast games for the New York Rangers and was a host on the MSG Radio Network.

Prior to his time at NHL Network, Mears spent three years as a host on the Penguins Radio Network and PensTV, including the final season at the Civic Arena. From 2006 to 2009, he also served as the radio play-by-play broadcaster for the New York Islanders, his first job in the NHL.

Mears is a 2002 graduate of Bowling Green State University, where he broadcast games for the Falcon hockey team for four years. Following his college tenure, he worked in minor league hockey as the voice of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in Bossier City, Louisiana for four seasons. He was named CHL Broadcaster of the Year in 2005.

A Western PA native, Mears grew up in Murrysville and is a graduate of Franklin Regional High School.
